Antonio Vivaldi was an Italian Baroque composer, violinist, and Catholic priest. Born in Venice in 1678, he showed musical talent from an early age and went on to study at the conservatory of the Ospedale della Pietà, a home for orphaned girls where he eventually became a teacher and composer.
Vivaldi's output of over 800 compositions includes operas, orchestral works, chamber music, and concertos, many of which feature the violin as the solo instrument. He is perhaps most famous for his set of four violin concertos entitled "The Four Seasons," which are known for their lively, descriptive character pieces.
Throughout his life, Vivaldi worked as a composer and performer in Venice and other cities in Italy, and he also made several trips to Europe to perform and showcase his music. Despite his success, he faced financial difficulties in his later years and died in poverty in Vienna in 1741.
Vivaldi's contributions to music have had a lasting impact, and his works continue to be performed and recorded by musicians around the world. He is considered one of the greatest Baroque composers and a master of the violin concerto form.
