Shawn Nelson was a U.S. army veteran and plumber who had fallen on hard times. In a period of just five years, he got severe injuries from a motorcycle accident, his wife divorced him, his parents both died from cancer, his brother become addicted to meth, and his plumbing business lost all its money.
And then one day, he just snapped.
On May 17, 1995, Nelson stole a 57ton tank from a California Army National Guard armory in San Diego and went on a rampage through neighborhood streets of the city. He plowed through road signs, traffic lights, fire hydrants, and around 40 parked vehicles, including even an RV. He took out utility polls, causing thousands of people to lose electricity. Police chased him for 23 minutes when finally the tank got stuck on a concrete median barrier and lost one track. Police
broke in and shot him in the neck.
Incredibly, Nelson, the one who destroyed and terrorized an entire neighborhood with the tank was the only one who died in the whole ordeal.
