8 Nimbin, New South Wales
This quirky city is located in the “Rainbow Region” of New South Wales. It’s a strange cultural experience coming to this town, that’s made up of hippies, college students, arty people and those that enjoy a party. The media believe this town to be a social experiment, but it’s just a great place to chill and have a good time.
7 Manshiyat Nasser, Egypt
Also called Trash City, this city is literally covered in trash. The city is close to Cairo, and Cairo is not great at disposing of their rubbish. So, the people of Manshiyat have taken over the role of rubbish collectors and that’s how they make a living. When Cairo hired a disposal company in 2003, it became quite a competition between the company and the Manshiyat people to get the trash.
6 Juzcar, Spain
This city was painted blue for the Smurfs movie and remained that way ever since. The blue was a huge drawcard for tourists, and within a year, the town went from receiving 300 tourists a year to 80,000! You can attend a Smurfthemed event all year round and they like you to know that they’re renowned for their mushrooms and fungi too, just like our blue friends.
5 Whittier, Alaska
Imagine an entire city living in a block of flats… that’s the case in Whittier, Alaska. The 14story block of flats has everything the people need – shops, a police station, salon, hospital and church. Weather in this area is freezing, so the 220 people economize on heating by living like this.
4 Auroville, India
This city was created by means of an experiment, in the hope of creating a utopia or an oasis of perfection. It was founded by Mirra Alfassa, also referred to as “The Mother.” 2,000 people still live there today, and nobody is a property owner and no money exchanges hands. No one is in charge and there are no set rules. It’s a town where people live in peace and harmony and try to be united. The core of the city is the beautiful dome temple called “The Matrimandir,” and it doesn’t encourage one specific religion. Anyone can go there. Tourism is popular here, and you might even find your inner spirituality.
2 Setenil de las Bodegas, Spain
This city is intriguing and attracts many tourists from around the globe, and that’s because it’s built into massive basalt rock! You can walk through the streets and look up and see rocks hanging over your head! The rocks have been hanging like this for centuries, so I’m sure you will have no problem with them falling on your head when you visit.
