MYTHS AND LEGENDS 12: Aztec and Maya Mythology

EPISODE 65 OF BUT THAT IS ANOTHER HISTORY (web documentary series)

Mayan and Aztec mythology is full of interesting stories with which the ancient Mesoamericans tried to respond to the great mysteries of the world. The god most known in these myths is Quetzalcoatl, the feathered serpent, also called Kukulcan or Gucumatz.

We know much of the legends of the Quiche Maya thanks to the Popol Vuh manuscript, which tells stories like that of the Hunahpu and Ixbalanqué twins, who traveled to Xibalba and ended up rescuing the father of both.

Among the myths Nahuas highlight the myth of origin and creation of the five suns, each created and destroyed by different gods and that would end with a tremendous only avoidable apocalypse based on human sacrifices. His most known gods were Huitzilopochtli and Tezcatlipoca, as well as Tlaloc and Xipe Tótec.
