Masaya volcano is located to the south of Managua, the capital of Nicaragua. Whilst the volcano is capable of massive explosive eruptions and of emplacement of large volume lava flows, recent activity has involved the generation of shortlived lava lakes in the main crater. The current lava lake has been growing in size since late 2015. The current material was obtained in April 2016 thanks to the kind assistance of Dr W. Strauch / INETER and the government of Nicaragua.
The volcano is also infamous since it is reported that during the Somoza dictatorship, political prisoners from the nearby La Fortaleza prison were disposed of in the active crater of the volcano.
