The guys at Food Steez are experts at dope sandwiches. Here, they take the traditional steak sandwich to a new level with homemade cheese sauce and caramelized onions.
Steak Sandwich with Cheese Sauce and Caramelized Onions
• 1 yellow onion, thinly sliced
• 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
• ¾ pound sirloin steak tips, cut into ½ inch pieces
• 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
• 1 tablespoon butter
• 2 tablespoons flour
• 1 cup milk
• 8 ounces Dubliner cheese, shredded
• ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper
• 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
• Salt and pepper, to taste
• 2 sandwich rolls, sliced
For the sandwich, heat vegetable oil in a sauté pan over mediumlow heat. Add onions, a pinch of salt, and cook (stirring occasionally) for 1520 minutes until onions slowly turn brown and sweet. Meanwhile, in another pan, combine steak tips, salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce over mediumhigh heat. Cook to desired doneness.
For The Cheese Sauce, in a small saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Add flour, whisking constantly, until flour beings to darken and turn brown. Add milk, stirring constantly, and simmer until mixture thickens, about three minutes. Remove from heat, and add cheese, cayenne, and paprika. Salt and pepper to taste.
To assemble the sandwich, spread each side of each hoagie roll with some of the cheese sauce. Add caramelized onions, steak, and cover with remaining cheese sauce.
