If you find baby animals that look abandoned, the chances are they are just fine! Just stay back and observe their behaviour; Mum is usually close by, waiting for you to leave.
Animal mums are really dedicated to their young. If you have got too close they will know that something is wrong and they will often take their babies somewhere safe. Many mammals have a backup den/burrow/drey, and will use this if the current one is under threat.
In the clip below, taken with an infrared camera, you can see the hedgehog mum carrying her 4 babies one after another. She even carries some bedding to the new den to keep her babies warm.
If you discover baby mammals, and have any doubts about whether or not they have been abandoned, STOP! Seek advice from your local wildlife rescue centre or call us on our 24 hour emergency Helpline: 09061 800 132 (Calls charged at 50p per min to help with funding).
Thank you Simon for the voice over!
