Barack Obama and George W Bush gave eulogies for the late senator John McCain at a memorial service at Washington National Cathedral on Saturday. Without mentioning his name Obama delivered a broadside at the current US president Donald Trump criticising "insult and phony controversies" in politics and public life. George W Bush said McCain "loved freedom with the passion of a man who knew its absence and, perhaps above all, detested the abuse of power and could not abide bigots and swaggering despots"
